General Suggestions for Group Discussions of So Help Me God:
Tip #1 Confront the controversy:
Every view needs an open opportunity to be heard. Set the tone of the group discussion from the very start by acknowledging that the group will not agree about the abortion issue. The discussion is of the book and its treatment of the subject rather than being focused on finding a united opinion regarding the ultimate right or wrong. Perspective shapes views and every perspective has value in widening the views of the group as a whole. Agree to disagree and to search out the perspectives of the characters and motives for their actions in the novel. Keep it light and fun. The discussion will become lively, intense, educated and still friendly.
Tip#2 Read the book:
In many groups a few members read the selection while a majority read excerpts or skim the book. So Help Me God has enough twists and turns, character expressions and interwoven background that those members who did not read the entire book may be misdirected when joining in on the discussion. Find a store in your area which gives discounts to Reading Groups, look for discounts online or contact our marketing director for assistance in finding multiple copies for discounted prices. Swap books with other reading groups in your area as way to keep costs down!
Tip #3 Add drama:
Courtroom/legal drama literature provides a terrific opportunity for groups to "get into" the roles! Select a few trial testimony passages and assign reading parts to several members of the group. Set up a courtroom arrangement of chairs and place the balance of the group in the role of the jury. The change in perspective gives the passages new meaning and discussion flows easily from the role playing.
